I am officially a crazy cushion lady; there, I’ve said it! Because like many of us, whether its popping out for some retail therapy or my weekly food shop, I seem to walk out with a cushion of some kind with no thought other than ‘its pretty’. I have bought so many cushions and throws over the years that the Hubbie tells me that I could have bought myself a few designer bags instead. A depressing thought. But it has taught me some invaluable lessons about giving a little more consideration when purchasing soft furnishings.
In this blog post, I want to show you why soft furnishings are so important and how it can transform our interiors and home décor.
WHY ARE SOFT FURNISHINGS SO IMPORTANT?
Imagine if you looking in the mirror and wearing a plain white tee and some basic denim jeans. Your next accessory decisions are what could completely transform your look. See interior design works in the same way. You need to start with a base and build upon that with various layers to create your overall desired look. And soft furnishings play a major role in this layering. Whether you are looking for affordable high street items or fancy a splurge, soft furnishings such as cushions, curtains and throws can define the scheme to your room. But most importantly, these items are interchangeable. As trends evolve or your own person tastes change, know that with minimum spend and effort, you could update your décor within an afternoon!
TRANSFORM NEUTRAL DECOR
If you have decorated your space with a neutral colour scheme, then soft furnishings can introduce some much needed colour and texture. To create maximum impact, think about going for bold and colourful curtains. If you are working with a lower ceiling height, the trick is to hang the curtain rail as near to the ceiling as possible. The higher you place the curtain rail, the longer the curtain drop. This draws your eyes up giving the illusion that you have a high ceilings. This trick also allows you to use bold patterns that will create a focal point but not overpower a neutral space.
Additionally, cushions and throws are great styled on accent chairs and sofas. To accessorize a sofa, the general rule is to purchase two of the same cushions of a larger size styled and two smaller cushions. The larger cushions should ideally be plain block colours. Play on these textures and consider using velvet, suede, leather and wool. For the smaller accent cushions think bold colours in textures such as weave, tassels, mongolian wool, embroidery and silk.
SHOW YOUR PERSONALITY AND INDIVIDUALITY
The high street is awash with soft furnishings meaning that they are more accessible than ever. Ranging from supermarkets, fashion retailers and more specific homeware stores, there’s something for everyone out there. The advantage with soft furnishings is that because a large selection is more at a reasonable price point, you can purchase trend lead pieces regularly and really let your personality shine through you home accessories. Ultimately your tastes will change, so you can change your home décor as often as you like.
There are no rules about what patterns, colours or textures to select but to compliment your home décor, soft furnishings that feature colours that are already in the room always work well.
INVEST FOR A LUXE LOOK
Luxurious home décor can be created by being smart and investing in key pieces. They will become the feature in your room. Whether you have gone for colour or a more neutral scheme, investing in luxe soft furnishings will alter the mood. It will look like you’ve had an interior designer come in.
The key is to stay clear of trend lead pieces and stay true to your own style and personality. The intention is that if you are paying a little extra for these stand out pieces, you want them to have timeless designs and last years. The likeliness is that you will also move your soft furnishings around the home when you want a quick décor update. Ensure that you pick colours and designs that would fit a number of schemes.
Since my new velvet teal sofa arrived, I have been searching for luxurious cushions that have a uniqueness to them. So it was timely when BIVAIN contacted me and asked me to sample one of their latest designs, the Azizi. A gorgeous bohemian monochrome inspired piece which is beautifully finished with delicate layering and tassel details.
Founded in 2016 by Megha Lohia and Rachel Fong, BIVAIN is a contemporary home décor and accessories brand offering objects of desire with an edge. The Central Saint Martins-trained designers worked for brands including Agent Provocateur and Zac Posen prior to launching BIVAIN; and with an appetite for the bold and the whimsical, they set out to create a lifestyle brand with serious sex appeal!
Based in London, BIVAIN draws inspiration from the sensory experiences of international wanderlust. Encompassing silk cushions, throws, scarves, pocket squares and more, the collections are exclusively produced by highly-skilled craftsmen using the finest materials.
So how important are soft furnishings in your home. And are you also a confessed crazy cushion lady like myself? I’d love to know in the comments section below.
This post was in collaboration with BIVAIN who kindly gifted me the Azizi cushion. As always, my opinions are my own and I would only recommend brands and products that I love and that I think you’ll love to.
